However, Bella falters 1-2 before Sandy hauls in two scores to give Bella command 4-2. Erin Moran and Jenny Gaynor add goals to give Wisconsin a 6-3 lead. USC responds to 6-5 before Sandy scores half 7-5. The clouds are threatening as Bitterman reels in a Callahan and Sandy scores her 5th break goal now 10-6. Bella runs away with the game 13-6 with 10 D's total, as Reebs, McKain, and George all add score multiple assist and goals.

Next is Western Washington as the winds increase. Bitterman scores but WW is up 1-2. Gaynor gets a layout D and score, but WW takes a 2-5 lead! Bella pulls it together as Westgate and Sandy pull in goals to make it 5-6, before dropping half 5-7. Beginning half WW breaks to lead 5-8, but Bella Donna is chill. Gaynor and Bitterman snag multiple goals as Wisconsin breaks 5 straight times to lead 11-8. Neither observers nor timeouts could stop Bella's intensity. Newman, Georgia, and Al pull in the last 3 points as Wisconsin wins 13-9.

Next up is Stanford as the winds loosen, still cloudy and 63ish. Becca, Schott, and Westgate scores goals as Wisconsin explodes to a 7-0 lead, overcoming 2 timeouts. Wisconsin never relents and wins 13-3, using aggressive D. Gaynor scores 4 goals, while Reebs and Sandy add 3 more. The 18 D's and Callahan top the performance.

Last up is Oregon, as Wisconsin moves fields and wind. orientation.
Frustrating - the game went exactly as the first meeting. Oregon's momentum was going up, Bella was in a lull. Oregon starts fast, Bella was never able to dictate. Erin Moran caught 2 goals and Bitterman added a score to tie the game 4-4. Bella turns 2 swing/dump passes and Oregon converts both in seconds to take half 4-7. Transition defense nowhere to be seen. Bella is able to break back in the second half to 6-8, but again cannot handle the perceived pressure of the moment. Soon it is 7-10, and ballgame 7-13. Oregon has a strong 5 person junky/cup that also goes man on the first dump, but it was Bella's timidness and uncertainty that was their undoing. Bella had only 3 D's against Oregon, compared to totals of 10, 13, and 18 in the first three games. If Bella can withstand Stanford in quarters and Washington in semifinals -- it will be a very angry revenge seeking KillMode BD in finals..

Sunday - PICTURES

[Sunday morning Bella got to the fields early and fired up for elimination rounds with a speech (geared at the newbies) on the many reasons we needed yet another redeeming win against Stanford. Unfortunately, even after amping up the revenge factor, Bella still came out looking like we'd run eight Bascoms that morning. Stanford took a 5-0 lead before McKain threw to Bitterman for a score on a no-turn point. Unfortunately, the scoring trend didn't catch on until Stanford had taken half 8-3. At this point the girls decided that losing in quarterfinals wasn't something they wanted to be a part of and, led by a couple "Ridiculous"-earning plays by their captains, went on a 7 point run to bring the game to 10-8. One more layout-D by Rachael Westgate and the game was finally closed out at 13-10.

Celebration lasted about a minute before we had to pack up and sprint off to another field to play Washington in semis. The game was a fight the entire way, with amazing plays on both sides of the disc. Erin Moran skied O'Malley for a score and a D'ed disc in the Bella endzone was snatched amazingly an inch off the ground by Bitterman to save a goal. The largest spread in the game was when Washington took half 8-5. Bella fought back, however, and brought it up to 12-12 after a sick Mahowald D. Soft-cap had already gone on, but unbeknownst to both teams, hard cap went on during the point, turning it into a DGP game that ended in Washington's favor after a couple unfortunate turns on Bella's end. On a positive note, Sandy ended up +9 for the game, with the next closest being Bitterman at +4.

Bumped out of a finals appearance for the second big tournament in a row, the team rallied and looked forward to a redeeming game against UCSB for third place. The game started out strong with freshman Erin Newman earning a D and score for a bookends lead. After this the game stayed close until 4-4, but Bella stayed fired up with Julie getting a layout D in the UCSB endzone and Sandy hucking a full-field backhand in the same point. From here Wisconsin took it away and without much trouble finished the game 15-8.]

Sunday written by Georgia. Now back to Muffin:

Wisconsin aims to get outside in Chicago for the first time this spring -- then clean up Centex to secure the 2 seed.

The main things that separate Bella are their depth, legs, and decision making. Undisciplined, but loaded with athletic talent and speed. More legs and endurance than any team. Even after coming back against Stanford and going 12-12 with Washington, both teams were way more exhausted than Bella. Literally, playing the same 7 players then calling timeouts to conserve their legs, while Bella puts out line after line after line of fresh legs. If only we could clean up the offense a little bit! Wisconsin plays unusual ultimate -- making all sorts of unconventional throws, random cuts, and just plain silly decisions. It's the midwest swirl opposed to the west coast spread. The undefendable star stack offense was drawn up during a timeout and run to perfection as well.

Best plays of the weekend including Sydney Dodkin's getting a ridiculous sky poach D. Julie "The Cat" Chen making up 4 steps on a deep throw and getting a bidding D in the end zone. Sandy played the best semi's of her life, going +9 with 5 goals, 3 D's, 1 assist, and 0 turns. Erin Newman had several bookends with run through D's and immediate deep goals. Gaynor had several nasty layout D's and big hucks. Georgia played like Callahan, while McKain shredded marks. Laura Schott had a sick poach sky D while Maria Mahowald hit the ground multiple times to save possessions. Laura Bitterman was a constant threat to explode on teams, as Westgate played solid the whole weekend. Aimee Speaker played gritty hard-nosed defense game in and game out. Reebs caught a floaty catch and spiked it on a girl's head, while getting injured all at once. Newman had a sweet bid catch in the end zone on a floaty Julie throw.

Next up, Hodag-Bella prom match-ups.

Prez Day

McKain says she only looked at 1/3 of the video...

The weekend began with 14 of 20 Bella's overrunning the Madison airport. Those not in the original group, beheld the hardships of a lost bag and early ticket back on a three day weekend. Wisconsin had a first round bye, but arrived to the fields early in anticipation of an awesome weekend. The sun was high in the sky and Bella's spirit was higher than it had been in months. Seasonal depression disappeared as the sunscreen came out, and San Diego's dominant architecture and mountainous terrain were mind blowing. It was rumored that God actually visited the UCSD library on the weekends. The weather and landscape were just perks, however, because Bella came to play.

The first round saw Bella (The Official Bill Nye Fan Club) matched up against a fired up Texas team. Bella started on offense, playing the vets to calm the nerves that inevitably come with the first spring tournament. After a quick Melee turn and a Georgia to Emo score, Bella's D line was set to dominate. Three breaks later, Texas' offense came out firing on all cylinders. Melee's handlers swung the disc well, setting up a nice deep look and a goal. Bella played shutdown defense and chilly offense to bring the game to half at 7-2. Both teams continued to play with the intensity of a tied game, layout D's and hand-blocks included. Bella finished the game 13-3. Even before the game against Melee was over, thoughts were on the much anticipated game against Stanford Superfly.

The newborn Stanford-Wisconsin rivalry, stemming from last year's nationals quarterfinals, brought emotion to the second round. Bella started on defense. Vu got the first D of the game. After a Bella turn, Bitterman got a sick run-through D that set up the score from Maria to Rachael. Stanford's offense used the break side effectively to make the score 1-1. The teams traded one more time before Bella found their groove. Wisconsin took half 7-3. Bella knew better than to relax after half and a fired up O line punched one in. The D line continued to roll, creating smart match-ups and moving quickly on Superfly turnovers. Bella closed out the game 13-4. Science rules!

The next two rounds featured match-ups with UC Davis and UCSD. Bella seized the opportunity to just play hard. After being cooped up inside for months, Bella came out of hibernation to stretch their legs. They ended the day 4-0 with scores of 13-2 and 13-1 respectively.

Top plays of the day include Al Ellis getting 3 layout D's in one point against Texas with her hair down, flying about, as well as a super sick layout catch D on the goal line against Stanford. Laura Bitterman and Sandy Jorgensen both collected bookends while fighting for the most plus on the day (winner +7 Bitt). Maria Mahowald ripped a 68 yard backhand to the Erin "The Cleanup Kid" Newman, who was in the right place at the right time for at least 3 goals today. Julie Chen skied and spiked the disc without regard, while both Maria and Rachael Westgate took full fledged blows from opponents in the face and arm respectively. McCain ruined marks as Gaynor ruined defenders, both playing very strong today. Kelsey had several big bigs for the disc deep as Speaker played tight shut down D all day. Vu and Reebs moved the disc easily as Jingy paced the offensive movement. Overall, Wisconsin played very smart and rested their legs in anticipation for two more hard days of ultimate in sunny California.

The night has been filled with Jersey Shore reruns, science projects, coffee shop study trips, and Jingy insisting that no one make her sing.

Bella will see UCLA and Oregon tomorrow in the race for the number one seed on Monday.

The first Wisconsin car arrived at the fields at 8:10am for a 10:45 game, as the 2 hour time difference made for early risers. A quick tour of campus and a little Aladdin in the bathroom, and Bella watched a bit of Colorado before finding their field. Sunday morning was very sunny and hot - a high of 78 degrees. Bella had a relaxed, yet thorough warm-up drills and looked mentally ready to begin. The power pools were a stark difference from the Saturday's teams, as UCLA started strong leading 2-3. The intensity was lurking, but not quite apparent. UCLA was protecting the disc and scoring consistently, leading 3-5. It took a Georgia sky D and 80 yard flick bomb to Bitterman to spark a break 5-5. Al Ellis scored a break to give Wisconsin the lead 6-5. UCLA ties the game before Becca scores half 7-6. Madison starts super strong in the second half, breaking 3 times to lead 10-6 as Sandy scores twice. Bella eases up just a bit and UCLA breaks back twice to bring it to 12-10. Bitterman slams the door and the disc on a huge sky and kick spike for the win 13-11.

Bella moved to the shade, only to find that the last game of the day against Oregon, began in 10 minutes. The captains stressed the importance of this game quickly as a couple of accelerations is all the warm-up Wisco took. Oregon gave Wisconsin their choice on flip, choosing Offense. Oregon covered the pull well and break 3 times straight to lead 0-3. Bitterman finally scored to get Wisconsin on the board 1-3, but Oregon pressured and D'd every throw to lead 1-5. Bella settled in and break back to fet to 3-5 and felt a little better. Fugue scored to lead 3-6 and McCain answered to 4-6, finally getting some confidence. Oregon scored upwind with a ridiculous catch to take 4-7 and fully in control. Bella needed an answer and fired up during halftime -- finally getting angry.

It was pretty windy, but Wisco responded -- closing the score to 6-9 with the disc on the end zone line. All 3 coaches agreed that Bella needed to score this point and when Oregon rushed the field at 6-10 it was over. Fugue played with high energy all game and made countless (~8) spectacular layout catches and skied deep repeatedly. Their transition offense found goals within 5 seconds repeatedly and Bella was left with only a bitter taste in their mouth 7-12. Wisconsin was done for the day, only to looking for the winner of Texas/California Berkeley.

Monday morning Bella was at the fields super early third day in a row. First game was against the Berkeley Pie Queens. Bella's warm-up was focused, intense, and with a vengeful attitude. Wisconsin was downright pissed about losing their last game on Sunday and was out for blood from the start. Cree Howard was the do-all for Cal, pulling 70 yards, playing shut-down D, and skying for the first point 0-1. Wisconsin pulled it together and break to lead 5-1. Madison took half 7-3 and traded to 8-4. Wisconsin played with heart from start-to-finish winning 13-4 despite Cree completely leaping over McKain for a jaw-dropping layout D. Lines quickly formed at the trainer, bagels, bathrooms, and most importantly, around our prodigal Texan, Frances Tsukano. After hugs and reintroductions it was time to prepare for our first game (the trainer, while fantastic, proved to be extremely careful and thorough, meaning a few of us less-intact players missed morning warm-up).

Wisconsin debuted against 25-seed Grinnell, beginning on defense with a starting line of Jenny "I learned how to ride a bike before Jon" Gaynor, Georgia "Fury calls" Bosscher, Rachael "I hate wearing clothes" Westgate, Maria "I have an eight foot wingspan" Mahowald, Rebecca "Old man face" Enders, Sandy "I actually hate everything athletic" Jorgensen, and Aimee "I have the best attitude about everything" Speaker. This dominant line earned their score from Reebs to Sandy after a D from Speaker. From there the game went by lighting fast, with Bella racking up scores with hardly a need to set up an offense. The mental focus faltered for a moment on game point when Grinnell managed to sneak in a score after a couple of Wisconsin turns, however, some smooth offense from Bitterman to Bloodford ended the game 13-1 with only ten turnovers.

The quickness of the first game allowed plenty of time to restock on bagels and sample the various flavors of Vitamin Water (acai-blueberry-pomegranate = fantastic, if complicated). Fully refueled, Bella looked to take on their second competitor of the day, Wash-U B with guest stars Holly "I go through Fly withdrawal within an hour" Greunke and Michelle "I personally know 90% of the Ultimate community" Nggwooanhuhh. Once again starting upwind on defense, Gaynor, Joja, Maria, and Reebs led the fray, this time joined by Becca "I can lobster claw catch discs at my knees" Ludford, Michelle "Please stop getting me sick, everyone" Hofeldt, and Erin "Who knew I had a boyfriend" Newman. The line battled through a turnover and ended the point with Lil' Goldenhand getting a D and throwing the score. Bella continued to rack up points, with both Maria and Bitterman each ending +6 (!) with no turns. Wash-U B was led by Kate "Deuce" Wilson, a great player who also graciously hosted all of Bella at her apartment (thank you!). Final score: 13-4.

Ohio State was up next, giving BD their first chance to start a game on offense. In continuation of tradition, Gg started with Erin "I did WHAT to Doede??" Moran, Frances "How many ways can I get injured standing still" Tsukano, Jenny "Ranch dressing" Koll, Sydney "I've played four years of varsity ultimate, what'd you do in high school?" Dobkin, Laura "Beth" Bitterman, and Emelie "I can dance lower than you can" McKain. The O line proved they had a bit of work to do by starting out with two turns, but managed to score anyway after a D from Australia and a throw from Bosscher to Frengces. The game went by quickly, ending 13-1 with a total of 10 D's and only 9 turns for Bella Donna. The defensive line stats are frightening.

Wisconsin continued to play better and better, ending the day against 12-seed Kansas. The starting D line of Fran, Bitt, Jaynor, George, Mars, Reebs, and Stallion continued the trend of turning it over on the first point of the game, but again, managed to get on the board anyway. A few points later a ferocious cup ran down a back-of-the-endzone pull, pushing Kansas into a corner. After only a few passes Rachael got a hand on a swing pass, changing the direction of the disc and giving Gwargia enough time to run it down for the Callahan. Teamwork at its best! From there the game flowed to a 13-1 finish, giving Bella a 4-0 record for their first tournament day as a team.

After an encouraging huddle, a few veterans and brave rookies played a rousing game of "MILK," (in which the participants throw a rejected disc into the ground as hard as they can and then try to catch it one handed when it pops sporadically back up), which Speaker somehow dominated at, despite kind of sucking at most other random disc games. From there the team packed up and headed back downtown in search of sustenance. A few who didn't think free Chipotle on Sunday would be enough to get them through a weekend found refuge in burritos, chips, and guac, while the more adventurous settled for Noodles&Co. At least no one can say Bella doesn't take advantage of local food options, since afterwards everyone flocked to FroYo and overloaded their cups with various combinations of fruit, cheesecake bites, and jimmies (some for the second time in the weekend).

The team settled into a mellow evening, watching Little Giants and Mulan in a quick 1-2 punch of motivational children's movies. The leadership then took off to a fantastic meeting with other captains and coaches focusing on ways to expand, support, and popularize college women's ultimate. A lot of great ideas and connections were tossed around which hopefully will lead to improvements across the board; from small to large schools, new to veteran players. It was also found out that Bella got reseeded at number 2 behind Iowa State because of a one point spread between differentials, pitting them against the winner of Ohio State and Northwestern for the morning quarters game.

Sunday morning Bella packed up, refueled briefly at Starbucks, and drove back to the fields (the completely brake-less van simply retracing the probably much longer incorrect directions, not having bothered to get new ones). After an intense warmup on a nearby football field Bella moved out to meet Northwestern coming off a prequarters win.

Bella made quick work of the first half, bringing it in at 8-0. Never complacent, they came out pumped for the second half (middle to FINISH!), with Bosscher tallying the first layout D of the weekend on an under cut. From there Northwestern started finding their game, even managing to break the Wisconsin O-line for 13-4. However, the Bella momentum had been rolling strong all weekend, and the game ended 15-5. Frances managed to score 6 goals and McPain and Bossch each had 4 assists. Mck and Jaynor tied at an impressive +5 overall.

Madison stayed on the same fields, waiting for the SLU alums to finish their game. Most of the SLU alumni were on the team last year that twice beat Bella on universe point. A very quick-moving, scrappy team, the SLU girls are athletic and make incredible catches, with Kara O'Malley leading by example and playing almost every point. The game started with Bella on D, but unfortunately the line was unable to convert and St. Louis became the first team all weekend to score before Wisconsin. Not to be outdone, Bella scored two in quick succession after Bitt fired up the team with a clutch footblock. The next point ended almost immediately as Bittewman-what's-yow-fiwst-name managed to grab a swing pass in the cup for Bella's second Callahan. However, SLU's handlers sliced through Wisconsin's next D attempt and then got a break of their own off a trap zone. Bella 3 - SLU 3. 4-3. 4-5. 6-5. 6-7. Finally, Bella took half 8-7. The game of two-point runs would have to stop for either team to emerge victorious. Hard cap went on at 9-9, meaning universe point, with Bella on defense going upwind. A strong line of Frances, Bitt, Georgia, McKain, Rachael, Maria, and Sandy took to the field to grab the ticket to finals. A D was earned, but squandered on a miscommunication. Bella then amped it up to dominating proportions, pressuring the SLU offense with the tightest man D in the Midwest, earning a throwaway near the Wisconsin endzone. A Diamond was called and executed perfectly, with Bitterman somehow juking around SLU's best defender to catch the game-winning throw from Joja. Bella had won their first universe-point game! Laura Littlebits had an absolutely dominant performance with 3 D's, 2 assists, and 4 scores without a single turnover: +9! Officially setting a new standard for every player on the field.

Fired up and excited, Bella brought it in and prepared themselves to play Iowa State, coming off their own universe point win against Wisconsin-Eau Claire (9-8). Iowa State has perennially been a Midwest dominator, in 2009 breaking through to College Nationals for the first time. Their strength runs through Jasmine "Jazz" Draper and Christine "Animal" Rosen, both dominant players who make ridiculously athletic catches and D's look easier than finding dollar beer nights in Madison. The game was pushed back 15 minutes to make up for both semis going to hardcap, giving Bella some extra time to come together and decide to dominate, everyone committing to playing their specific role so as to be 20 strong the entire game.

Bella started on D, but were unable to convert after two turnovers and Iowa State went up 0-1. Another 3 Bella turns in the next point put Woman Scorned up 0-2. Things slid even a little further downhill on the next marathon point as Bella fought upwind, but lost the point after 6 turns (not without 4 legitimate D's, however). A fired up O line then scored downwind from rookie Julie "Just took the title for most stylish on the team away from Sarah Offutt" Chen to Bitter. Iowa State answered back again after another hell point (Bella racking up 5 turns). Finally the Wisconsin ladies decided to give up on the whole "turn the disc over" strategy and amp up the D (Gaynor leading things with a handblock), scoring the next 4 in a row to bring it to 5-4.

Iowa State punched in one more to keep things close, and almost scored the next after two unfortunate turnovers by Madison. However, Lil' Bitt decided to take things into her own hands: the rest of the team worriedly watched as the disc was thrown toward an open offender in the endzone. Bitterman suddenly arrived airborne from halfway across the field to hit the disc away with a sick layout D. Not to be outdone, Jenny "Cooler" Gaynor kept things interesting by getting her own mile-high layout D, also against an open offender in the endzone. After this succession of ridiculously talented defense, the line had no choice but to score, bringing it to 6-5, BD. During that point Iowa State's Christine Rosen took an injury sub because of severe cramping, dealing Woman Scorned a large blow both to their game flow and to their confidence. Wisconsin, on the other hand, was only continuing to peak, scoring the next 5 in a row with only 1 turnover. The rest of the game seemed anticlimactic, with Iowa State scoring only 2 more times, and Madison finishing the game on a roommate connection from McPain to Urn Moran. 15-7, and Bella's first official tournament victory!
Free Chipotle rejuvenated the Wisconsin energy as the girls prepared for their 6.5 hour drive home. Final thoughts on the weekend:

Michelle Ng runs a pretty sick show. Loving the updates and quick delivery of information.

Iowa State and Eau Claire have a rivalry comparable to the Packers and Vikings. No comment on which is which, though one could equate Robyn to Favre, minus the multiple retirings and switching of sides.

The Bosscherbella van is officially retired after limping home and thankfully not blowing up. A toast was given in its honor. You may post condolences below.

Courtney Kiesow has a gorgeous voice, just don't expect to be able to hear your name called on the sideline. She's not as quiet as Holly was though, so I guess our coach selection is improving in volume.

Bella's rookies are terrifyingly good. Their confidence is on the up and up and they're already making plays rivaling the veterans.

There should be a FroYo in Madison, mostly so Shira can be blissfully and unequivocally happy more than once or twice a year.

And finally and most importantly: Wisconsin is officially starting a Legacy of Hurt. I would recommend getting on board, it is going to be awesome.

Introducing Bella Donna 2010

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The fall winds were sending leaves flying and the cool temperatures threatened a winter frost advisory. Utilizing speedy down field defenders like Laura Bitterman and aggressive defensive, Madison was able to generate turnovers quickly against Illinois. Jenny Koll, Shira Klane, and Rebecca Enders all moved the disc confidently and converted breaks in both directions. Wisconsin rolled to a 12-0 lead before McKain was left with all newbies and lost a macked marathon point, leading to explosive outbursts of frustration despite the overwhelmingly strong start. Wisco finished 13-1 and rallied to the Cu1timate tent; grabbing food, signing up for the party raffle, and feeling the velvet softness of the new Patagonia shorts.
The second of Madison’s 4 pool play games was against a fun-loving Michigan State squad. The winds were subtle still, but the legs of Wisconsin were shining through as Maria Mahowald and Becca Ludford recorded getting multiple D’s. Freshman Al Ellis and Erin Newman both hauled in break goals as Wisco again rolled to a big win 13-2. Seattle recruit Sara Scott cheered on Paideia stud freshman Sydney Dobkin's as full out shut-down defense proved too much.
The third pool play was against a feisty Colorado State, who had speed and throws to match. Jenny Gaynor and Rachael Westgate dominated the cutter lanes as Wisconsin took a 7-1 halftime lead. Bella alumni Courtney Kiesow kept the lines open as Madison cruised to a 13-2 win, riding a few boom headshots from Georgia and Mabrowald.
The last game of Saturday was against Regional rival Carleton, who was rolling only ~12 players deep. Madison jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the blustering winds, but Syzergy fought back with an upwind break to make it 4-3, seriously testing Wisconsin’s resolve. Veterans like Bitterman, Koll, and Gaynor stepped up their intensity and made big plays to take half 7-3. During the final points of the day, Wisconsin found their legs and pushed Carleton to the brink, taking the game 13-4. The Gaynor’s hosted dinner before the tournament party, which raffled off the latest Patagonia swag.
The Sunday morning heavy frost pushed back start times 45 minutes before the sun peeked through the clouds to burn it off. It was warmer with a high in the mid-50s, but the wind was also picking up. Wisconsin met fellow Regional rival Iowa in quarterfinals, who had already battled to a victory while Madison enjoyed their first round bye. Saucy Nancy was running a stiff zone and taking big shots down field consistently, trading the first few points 4-2. Georgia Bosscher began asserting her presence and Sandy Jorgensen provided a Sunday spark of athleticism as Wisconsin gradually pulled to a 7-2 half as Jenny Koll rifled in scores. Madison remained comfortable in their zone offense as the defensive pressure increased, riding the tenacity of Aimee Speaker and forcing Iowa into tight corners. Save a couple marathon upwind points, Wisconsin pulled away to win 13-2.
Wisco met a high-flying Iowa State in semifinals, who had knocked off Carleton in their quarterfinals meeting. The winds had definitely increased and for the first time all weekend, Madison hit a lull in energy. ISU took full advantage with their big deep game, staying even 4-4 and openly questioning Wisconsin’s talent. It took a time-out and some soul searching for Madison to find their stride, breaking upwind on a ridiculously strong Bosscher pull and subsequent breaks to take half 7-4. Iowa State began punting and cherry-picking the upwind end zone, while backfield drops slowed Wisconsin’s engine. Eventually patient handler movement of Shire Klane and Emelie McKain proved too much and Madison pushed to a 12-9 victory.
As the sun fully appeared and the winds intensified, it was a rematch of Hucktoberfest finals – Madison vs. Eau Claire. Iowa State, Carleton, and Iowa all have top-notch handlers and deeps, but Eau Claire has Robyn Fenning, who stunt doubles as the Macho Man Randy Savage occasionally. With a deep presence and flick huck to match – Eau Claire is a dangerous opponent. The first points were exciting as both teams exchanged deep bombs for goals 2-2. Madison broke upwind first, but Sol matched it with a big upwind grab. During the first 6 points, Robyn had 2 layout D’s on 7-8 attempts, narrowly missing the disc at least twice more. But Wisconsin’s deeper legs proved the difference as tight down field D and pesky marks widened the margin 7-4 at half. Superfreak Sandy Jorgensen recorded countless D’s while Jenny Koll shredded the field upwind. Maria Mahowld ripped a big backhand to Westgate for a break, while OB pulls kept the game within striking distance. The final score showed 13-8 as Wisconsin cheered the first of many tournament victories this season. Skip provided a Chipotle burritos and a set of “bags” to the champions as Madison posed with the winner’s banner. The final Bella Donna squad will be awarded soon, with tough decisions to make. Meanwhile, Atropa will add a few more girls to their already substantial roster, once again captained by Eyleen Chou.

The last game of the tournament was the boys final – a rematch of Carleton tryout’s vs. Wisconsin-X. The game was played at breakneck speed, with all the intensity of an early May Regional final. Kanner, Fagin, and Alex Evangelides played well and broke first to lead 4-5. Wisco stacked the line repeatedly and took the lead 7-6, going downwind. The last point can only be described as long and highly contentious as a 40 minute marathon turned universe before Smart hit Bergen for the win 8-6. The Wisconsin sweep was in effect as burritos disappeared and personal No Wisconsequences “bags sets” were auctioned off to the various Frisbee houses. One thing is for sure, it should be another exiting year in the Central!

Fall Information

Interested in playing with Bella Donna for the 2009-2010 season? Not even a little bit.

Georgia embodies every aspect of the Callahan award with athleticism, spirit, skill and leadership that is unmatched in college ultimate. Georgia is the backbone behind Bella's offense and the most versatile weapon a team could have. Without a doubt, she is a phenomenal player, but even more notable is her love for the game and dominant leadership. Georgia is a selfless teammate, always putting Bella Donna first. She plays with heart and drive, but is also an extremely gracious competitor. She's the full package.

Georgia came into Bella Donna in the spring of her sophomore year, immediately making her presence known with her 70" vertical, manly pulls, and giant forehand hucks. After only a short semester on Bella Donna, Georgia tried her luck at captaining and has remained a Bella leader ever since. Georgia leads by example and pumps her teammates up by getting giant layout d's and frightening skies. Georgia will match up against the best players on opposing teams and sky, break and humiliate them. Fortunately for them, she will probably apologize and assure them she just got lucky. If you've ever watched Georgia play, you know that her amazing speed, strength, throws and decisions make her the most dynamic player in college ultimate. Don't believe me? See for yourself.

2004 Jr. World's Captain & silver medalist

2006 Jr. World's Captain & gold medalist

Great Lakes FOTY in 2006

Spirit of the Game Award 2007

Central All-Region 2007 & 2008

Captain of Bella Donna 2007-2009

Georgia Bosscher for Callahan '09

Let's help her get the award she deserves.

Regionals Highlight Video

We were only able to tape Saturday... most of this video is relevant to ultimate.

Watch Wisconsin Bella Donna Regionals 2009 in Sports | View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

Rachael Westgate - Central Region FOTY 2009!

Meet freshman Rachael Westgate, #26. Originally from Andover, MA, Rachael came to us this year with an extensive understanding and love of the game that translated directly to her quick integration into our starting defensive line. Sick layout d's, fantastic throws, and aggressive, consistently open cuts are all in the daily life of Rachael Westgate.

She's an amazing team player, pouring heart and soul into Bella, whether it's dominating like a 5th year on the field, shouting like crazy on the sideline, outstripping most of the team in workouts, or lifting on her own time, Rachael embodies everything that Bella Donna strives for.

Rachael Westgate for Central Region FOTY 2009! Watch for her in Northfield this weekend at regionals where she'll be dominating both the d and the o lines.

Sectionals

UW-Madison Women's Ultimate Program
Bella Donna & Atropa

In the spring of 2006 (my freshman year on Wisconsin-B), there were five women's teams that attended the Lake Superior Sectionals, two of them were from UW-Madison. Three years later, the number has only grown to seven teams, but the talent within those teams has vastly improved. I'm incredibly impressed with the Eau Claire (where?) women's ulti program; through the years they've grown into a very strong team, put together a great zone-D, and are likely contenders for nationals. Teams like Whitewater and Lawrence are still in the building process, but in a few years they could surprise everyone (Susan Boyle style). It is amazing to see women's ultimate expand the way it has throughout my college career and I expect to see considerable gains as the ultimate community grows with time.

This year is the first year a solid B-team has stayed afloat for UW-Madison. Led by former Bella Eyleen Chou, Atropa quickly eliminated their "b-team" status and began competing at tournaments like Vegas and Midwest Throwdown, breaking their 41st seed and finishing 10th at Vegas! Atropa has some serious potential on their team; rookie Anna Shanedling has amazing hands and it's hard to find someone quicker than noob Adrienne Rust. Atropa took 4th at sectionals and is seeded 9th for regionals, but I wouldn't be surprised if they caused a few upsets. As a former B-team player, it's truly awesome to see UW-Madison's ultimate program reach new levels and I hope this growth continues for years to come.

On a different note: Bella is the one seed for regionals. It's all happening. Let's go.

Centex Highlight Video

Watch Wisconsin Bella Donna Centex 2009 in Sports | View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

Bella Donna: Centex

After spending a week laying (actually just burning) in the sand and treating their bodies with utter disregard, BD had a week to shape up and get serious for Women's Centex, easily the most competitive tournament Bella would travel to this year before college natties. The end of SB2kFINE was sobering (in many ways), as BD realized the spoils of the week included a broken toe, finger, some misplaced knees, and other various ailments. By Saturday morning of Centex, these injuries weren't anything a big dose of ibuprofen couldn't fix. Bella was ready to dominate; starting the trail of tears with SLU (who had previously beat Bella on universe with only the wind and a lucky flip to thank for that).

SATURDAY

BD's first two games were tucked behind tennis courts, protected but not fully shielded from Austin's brutal winds. BD started the game on O and traded for the first three points until SLU got a break. BD assumed they could win the game acting half asleep and barely on D, but they were in for a rude awakening; soon Bella was down at half 5-8. SLU's scrappy offense relies heavily 50/50 balls and feisty grabs, but it worked Bella's O-face until the score was 12-6 SLU. Finally McKain decided it was business time and BD needed a scolding. McK Shouted for all to hear, "You have two options, to win this game or lose this game!" FACT: when that small Italian speaks, it is important. That's all it took to bring Bella back to reality and start playing tight D and their well-rehearsed O. At one point Georgia Bosscher's manly pull floated perfectly to the of the end zone and she caught a callahan on the first throw (in case you didn't understand, OFF HER OWN PULL). This is everyone's wet dream, but not for Georgia; her life long ambition is to get a layout callahan off of her own pull (and marry an otter but that's beside the point). While Bella was finally pumped up after a sloppy 3/4 of a game, coming out of half scoring six points (SLU scored once somewhere in there), it was too late and they couldn't finish with a W. Soccer shorts win on hard cap, 13-12.

Round one recap: Bella played a conservative game with only 47 turns (oh god) to start off Saturday morning at Centex.

After a demoralizing defeat, all BD could do was drink pickle juice and gear up for Southern California, a team they knew nothing about. Bella Rick Rolled this game 13-9. The score may seem close but Bella maintained control throughout the entire game, shredding marks and pwning SC players. Post game both teams celebrated with a highly anticipated spirit circle, in which we talked about feelings and touched each other. The only thing missing was Speaker, who would have loved it more than life itself.

Round two recap: Never have I ever, been in a spirit circle.

The last game in pool play was against Cal Berkeley's Pie Queens, the #1 seed in the D pool. Knowing that if they didn't go into this game completely focused it could be SLU all over again, Bella psyched up and prepared for domination. After scoring the first 7 breaks of the game, BD was even hungrier for an upset. Claiming that Bella gelled like a Dr. Scholl's commercial during the Cal game is an understatement. Early in the game, McKain let Cal know who was boss and got a nasty hand block right outside of Cal's endzone, later Fran amped it up with a sky callahan. Wisconsin took half at 8-2. After some sick backwards line-toeing by Bitterman, Wisconsin wins 15-5.

Round three recap: BD's never played a stronger game. They finish the day and win the pool.

Winner winner, bbq dinner (plus our very own stallion Sandy buns in the rookie showcase game and watching the dance off).

SUNDAY
PRE-QUARTERS

Bella knew that Sunday would be hard when they found out they had to play Michigan in pre-quarters. Flywheel is a team BD has seen numerous times this spring and is made up of some serious ballers. Ebae makes any break throw and huck look effortless, and with receivers like Bemu and WHOA Nelly it's not hard to see how intimidating Flywheel can be. Because of Bella's slow start Saturday morning, they were the first team to the fields Sunday morning, warming up and getting any kinks out of their well oiled system. Conditions were perfect. Game time, Bella starts on O, running the usual O; George (iso) gets the disc and jams a perfect huck right into Fran's hands in the endzone. Wisconsin 1-0. Flywheel answers with anther quick point. Captain to captain chemistry fuels the next O point, Court to Georgia 2-1. When Michigan takes half 8-6, they're up two breaks and soon score their O point coming out of half. BD goes on a run to tie it at 9's and then trade a few points before pulling ahead 13-11. This was a clean game with considerably less turns than any other game BD played at Centex. In the end, it was Bitterman that probably won the game for BD. Bit's endzone D and score made it 12-11. With the hard cap on, Flywheel had a chance to tie it up. Unfortunate for them, Georgia's giant pull (that probably would have gone out of bounds) was caught at the very back of the endzone and then thrown into Bit's hands for a winning callahan. She didn't spike it in all her glory; instead she whispered to McKain, "boom, toasted."

Pre-quarters recap: BD pulls out a narrow win after Bitterman shows the world just how good looking she can be. McKain manages to play 21 points without a single turnover. HEY GO BLUE!

QUARTERS

Looking at other pre-quarters match-ups, the Wisconsin v. Michigan match-up was definitely the most difficult one. Needles to say, Michigan would have had a much easier path had they not lost their pool the previous day. Quarters against Stanford started almost immediately after the Michigan game ended. Bella hadn't seen Superfly since Centex '08 but had heard through the grapevine they were new & improved. Until Centex, this was the only team to beat Santa Barbara, BD knew to take them seriously. Stanford's game in the air was anchored by #8 Liz Cassel, with #16 Jenny Founds behind most break throws. Both #9 Danielle Platt and #7 Ali Mendoza were annoying quick, burning Bella players in and deep. Holly put out a sick starting D-line composed of Bitty, George, Jamber, Gay, Mc, Rach and Sandybuns. The D-line broke for a score, Bit to the Stallion. The stallion galloped across the field before throwing a full field spike (a TMF was soon to follow). Bella capitalized on Superfly's errors (including a dropped pull) during the next few points. Gaynor, Erin and Bit scored the next three breaks assisted by none other than mc, george and jamber, making it 4-0 BD. Stanford called a time out and made some readjustments to their D, switching to a poach-style D off the handlers. It took a few unanticipated Stanford poach D's in the lane before Bella started seeing the field again and put a few into the endzone, including a morning passover surprise layout catch by CK on an overthrown huck. No one saw her coming as she was was purposely jogging so slow she had to bid with all of her gangles, it was magical. Bella took half 8-3. The second half was filled with Emelie McKain layout D'ing Stanford player Ali Mendoza, who called fouls each time. If only McKain knew the rules of ultimate allowed her to take it to the observer... Jamber got a nasty hand block and layout D, Courtney shredded any poachy D they tried, and Sandy was quite the stallion. The game ended with Stallion catching a huck right outside the endzone and bombing a high O2 to Georgia. Final score 13-8 BD. Both BD and Stanford could have played a cleaner game, but Bella persevered because they were able to convert Superfly's drops and throw aways into scores.

Quarters recap: "Courtney's chicken surprise layout was the craziest thing I've ever seen" -Bob Barker

SEMIS

It's common knowledge that many people have been hyping Santa Barbara all year as one of the best if not the best college women's team in the nation. Led by Ramano, Finney and Jorgenson (and Barry when she's healthy), SB is a very handler dominant team, but also has the height and speed for sick deep catches. They have the most debilitating marks in college ultimate, eliminating many break options. Going into this game, BD knew they had something to prove. Taking the field on defense, BD started off with a break, Amber to Fran on a deep look. That was the only break either team would see until after half, as the rest of the points were even trading. BD took half after a Georgia to Rachel love connection, making it 8-7. UCSB scored the majority of their points on deep looks while Bella relied on quick movement with an occasional deep shot. UCSB is a very physical team; their disregard for personal space and the rules of contact certainly fueled some fire on each side. Out of half, BD started on o and quickly scored. Hungry for more breaks, BD got the next 3 in a row, making it 12-7. It's unclear if Bella just got cocky or content, but something was lost after this run. Cuts weren't sharp enough, handler fakes weren't convincing enough and hearts weren't in it enough. BD's run of 4 was matched by UCSB's run of 5 to make it universe point. Universe was the sloppiest point of the game, with at least 6 turns on each side but UCSB pulled out the win. Final: Wisconsin 12, UCSB 13

Quarters Recap: Don't ever push McKain. and don't you ever put toys on my cake again.

THIRD PLACE GAME
Nationals 2007, Centex 2008, Centex 2009. When it comes to UBC, BD just really drops the ball. Coming out of a devastating loss after being SO close to finals, Bella was emotionally and physically drained (see above). Having played three high scoring games against big names like Michigan, Stanford and UCSB, there was no doubt UBC had the easier path with previous games against Maryland, SLU and then a low scoring game with Ottawa.

Starting the game, BD scored the first O point and then the next two consecutive breaks in a row, one involving Georgia bombing a forehand huck and Becca skying for the goal, looking rather athletic for a change. UBC scored the next three in a row, breaking the O-line twice. The rest of the half was mainly trading, with Gaynor and Erin both burning deep for the hucks of George and Amber. UBC ended up taking half 8-7 and then scored their O point out of half. By hard cap the score was 10-10, game to 11. Bella received the pull on universe, but turned it shortly after an atypical drop. UBC took advantage of the situation with a score followed by a celebration. Two games in one day lost on universe. awesome.

Despite the disappointing Sunday losses for BD, Women's Centex 2009 was amazing. Props to Michelle Ng, Texas Women's Ulti and the UPLA for putting together such a well run tournament.

A special thanks to:

-All of the parents and friends that ventured from Wisconsin, Oregon, and Massachusetts to show their support! Their sideline spirit and food kept BD alive through the long weekend.

-The Ricebowl. The weather was absolutely miserable all weekend, especially on Saturday with strong winds, tons of rain, and Wisconsin-like temperatures. This didn't seem to hamper the Bellas, as we dominated Friday and Saturday, beating UWashington in pool play 13-7 to finish up. Unfortunately Sunday started a little disorganized, with people warming up a different times, and games feeling a little unfocused. While we had no trouble cruising through quarters and semis, we weren't prepared to play a team on par with us by the time we got to finals.

The game was close the entire way, but Washington was up most of the time, giving them the adrenaline boost they needed to keep taking risks and playing hard while we played pretty quietly, never taking the time to pump up and decide to win. It was an unfortunate 11-9 loss, with all of us disappointed and thinking through what could have gone differently. However, not winning our first tournament is a great starting place for the season, and has only given us more motivation to get better.

Check out our highlight reel from the weekend!

Watch Wisconsin Bella Donna Vegas 2009 | View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

One more thing about Vegas - the Madison B team, Atropa, went in seeded 41st and ended up taking 10th! All that with only 9 players at a 3 day tournament. Ballers. I'm predicting them taking the 3rd spot to Nationals this year.

Mardi Gras

Our next tournament, Mardi Gras, was February 21-22. While never a very high-talent tournament, it was definitely stronger this year with a few with bigger names like Michigan, Texas, Emory, Georgia, Dartmouth, and more that I'm sure I'm forgetting. We played smoothly all weekend, never loosing focus, and playing almost completely even playing time through semis. The girls were looking forward to finals against Michigan - a great team that we hadn't seen yet. While Michigan only had 14 of their players (which may have hurt them by their 8th game of the weekend), they played hard and smart, making us work on defense and offense. Bella rose to the occasion and came out firing, scoring upwinders just as easily as downwinders, and getting D's at the slightest opportunity.

Emelie McKain had more layouts than the entire team during the entire tournament combined, seriously. The game ended fairly quickly 15-8, with the wind hardly seeming to factor in. We scarfed up our winner's king cake and got back on the bus to pick up the Hodags (also winners over Michigan on their side) and took the long, smelly treck back home, very satisfied and looking forward to the next tournament - which, incidentally, is Midwest Throwdown, March 7-8 in St. Louis, MO.

Keep checking in! We'll be posting more regularly, I promise. No Wisconsequences, a Cultimate-run event co-hosted by the Madison teams, was a huge success in its first year.

The women's team worked hard all weekend, winning their first three games with a total of 5 points scored against them. The final game of the day was against UW-Eau Claire, the under-seeded powerhouse led by Robyn Fennig. The entire game the teams traded points, with a lot of physical competition and sick grabs and D's. Bella finally pulled ahead and managed to win 14-12.

Sunday morning the team gathered to warm up, enjoying a first round bye and cheering on the B team in their game. The wind had picked up quite a bit, and warming up looked a little messier than Saturday. The first game was against Illinois (Menace), who won the flip and called the downwind endzone to start. At the beginning it looked like trading points would follow the wind direction, but suddenly 5 upwind points scored in a row by both teams left Bella up a break, 8-6. Halftime began, but the points had taken so long that the hardcap went on and the game was suddenly over, bringing Bella into semis.

The next game was against Colorado (Kali), who also won the flip, calling the downwind side. This game was tight, with a lot of downwind hucks and man defense on the upwind. Kali was up a break at halftime, 8-5, with the cap going on at 7-5 (game to 9). An intense halftime huddle pumped up the team, with sidelines going crazy and the on-field players ready to roll. The first point Bella scored downwind easily, bringing it to 8-6. Knowing the pressure, the team amped it up even more, needing an upwind break now or never. Beautifully placed throws and sick catches in the wind finally earned the point. 8-7. The next point Kali almost scored the upwinder for the game, but Bella's defense put the disc back in Wisconsin's control. The downwinder was scored, hardcap was on, it was universe point, 8-8. The defense got the D almost immediately after the pull, and started to work it upfield smoothly, but a dump throw miscommunication allowed Kali to get the disc back and score for the win. Disappointed, but still fired up, Bella looked forward to a third place game against Carleton, Syzygy.

This game started close, but with Syzygy only bringing 10 players to the tournament, it was clear that the weekend had taken its toll. Bella scored upwind points easily, strategizing around Carleton's zone, and playing amazing defense the entire game. The final score was a strong 11-4, giving Wisconsin a third place finish to end the tournament.

Next tournament, CCC in Athens, GA, November 8-9!

Fall 2008

Schedule for women's Ultimate Frisbee in the fall:

First Two Weeks:

These days will consist of getting to know people, learning skills, running a few drills, and scrimmaging.
